1000 beeches in memory of the prisoners of Buchenwald concentration camp
Naftali Fürst, survivor of Buchenwald concentration camp, stands next to a wild cherry in memory of the concentration camp inmates after planting on 21 September 2022. Fürst planted the 171st tree in the "1000 Beeches" remembrance project. In the project of the Lebenshilfewerk Weimar-Apolda, a memorial path is to be created piece by piece, dedicated to the memory of the victims of the death marches and the National Socialists' "euthanasia" murder programme. In the summer, the destruction of memorial trees caused nationwide outrage.
