Search tips
Search operators for a detailed search

- AND
- You don’t need the AND operator for simple searches — terms are linked automatically. For example, Politics Berlin finds all images containing both terms.
- OR
- If, on the other hand, you would like to receive images that contain either the term Politics or Berlin, the search Politics OR Berlin is suitable.
- NOT
- The NOT operator can be used to exclude search terms: Frankfurt not Eintracht, returns results that contain the term Frankfurt, but NOT the search term Eintracht.
Search tips
Advanced and unspecific search

- Expand terms with * (truncation)
- You can also replace parts of search terms with a *, e.g. car*, in which case all keywords beginning with ‘car’ are included in the search, e.g. car, cars, motorway, motorists, etc.
- Unspecific search with tilde ~
- With ~ (tilde) similar terms are found, even if a keyword or name is not spelt correctly, e.g. Tchernobil~ or Schmidt~.
Search tips
Search with German and English terms
As our content is international, please also use English terms if there are too few or imprecise hits or if you are searching for topics from abroad.

Search tips
Phrase search with quotation marks
If the order of the search terms is important or you want to search for fixed terms, use quotation marks: Example: “Berliner Philharmonie”, here only those hits are returned where the two search terms are directly after each other.
