The U.S. mafia film "The Godfather" by Francis Ford Coppola was released in New York on March 15, 1972. Under the title "The Godfather", the film was released in German cinemas on August 24, 1972. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Mario Puzo (who also wrote the screenplay), a family epic about the rise of the New York-based Corleone Mafia family, which originated in Sicily. The film, starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, was nominated for numerous awards and won three Oscars and five Golden Globes, among others. The film was also a great financial success and is one of the most artistically significant works in film history.
