Samuel Finley Breese Morse (born April 27, 1791 - April 2, 1872) was a U.S. inventor, painter, and art professor. Independently of similar efforts in Europe, he developed a simple writing telegraph beginning in 1837 and also, with his collaborator Alfred Vail, an early Morse code. Morse sent the first electronic message from Washington to Baltimore on May 24, 1844. Morse was also instrumental in introducing the daguerreotype to the United States.
