2022-04-27 - 50 years ago Vote of no Confidence against Willy Brandt
The narrow majority of the social-liberal coalition under Chancellor Willy Brandt of only twelve votes threatened to disappear once and for all when SPD and FDP deputies defected to the CDU/CSU in the dispute over the ratification of the East German treaties. For opposition leader Rainer Barzel, this was the catalyst for attempting a constructive vote of no confidence in Willy Brandt to replace the government and become chancellor. The threatened fall of the chancellor was met with vociferous public protest: thousands took to the streets in Bonn to demonstrate in support of Brandt and his Ostpolitik. The vote of no confidence on April 27, 1972, failed: Only 247 members of the Bundestag voted for Barzel, who would have needed 249 votes for an absolute majority.
