2022-06-03 - 30 years ago: UN Conference on the Environment in Rio de Janeiro
The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) was held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) from June 3 to 14, 1992, with representatives from 178 countries. It is also called the "Rio Conference", "Earth Summit" or "Environmental Summit" and is considered a milestone in the history of environmental protection. Since the UN Environment Summit in Stockholm in 1972, it was the first major international conference to discuss environmental issues on a global scale. Successor conferences were Rio+5 (New York, 1997), the "World Summit on Sustainable Development" ("Rio+10," Johannesburg, 2002), and "Rio+20" (Rio de Janeiro, 2012).
