2022-07-01 - 20th Anniversary Launch of the International Criminal Court (ICC)
On July 1, 2002, the statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) came into force. The court in The Hague, Netherlands, was to prosecute genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in the future. The treaty basis is the multilateral Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court of July 17, 1998. The ICC is currently supported by 123 states parties, including all the states of the European Union. Countries such as China, India, the United States, Russia, Turkey, and Israel have either not signed the Rome Statute at all, have not ratified the treaty after signing, or have withdrawn their signatures. The ISTC has opened numerous criminal cases against individuals in recent years, including against former militia leader Thomas Lubanga for recruiting child soldiers in the Second Congo War, and addresses crisis situations and crimes against humanity in many countries. These include the displacement of the Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar and war crimes investigations in the current Ukraine war.
