2022-09-20 - 50 years ago: Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt - vote of confidence
Chancellor Willy Brandt (SPD) introduced his motion for a vote of confidence in the Bundestag on September 20, 1972, which was voted on September 22. Brandt lost the vote, thus enabling early new elections (Nov. 19, 1972), from which the SPD/FDP coalition emerged stronger. The background was a stalemate in the German Bundestag, triggered by the Ostpolitik introduced by the social-liberal federal government under Willy Brandt. This had led to such major differences, even within the coalition, that several SPD and FDP deputies had left it. There had already been a vote of no confidence on April 27, 1972, for the same reason, but it failed: Only 247 members of the Bundestag voted for Barzel, who would have needed 249 votes for an absolute majority.
