2023-03-05 - 60 years ago - Hula Hoop - Patent for the plastic hoop.
On March 5, 1963, the hula hoop received its official patent. The patent was filed by Arthur Melin, co-founder of the American toy company "Wham-O" who had already launched the hula hoop, named after the Hawaiian dance, on the market in 1958. The hoop, made of plastic, became one of the most successful American toys. More than 100 million of the colorful plastic hoops were sold worldwide in 1958. Today, the hula hoop can still be found in many children's rooms, but is now very popular primarily as a fitness tool.
