2023-12-27 - 100th anniversary of the death of Gustave Eiffel
French engineer Gustave Eiffel (Dec. 15, 1832 - Dec. 27, 1923) is known worldwide for his iron and steel buildings. In 1866, he set up his own engineering firm and designed hundreds of buildings around the world. His most famous project was the Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 Paris World's Fair to mark the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. It owes its name to Eiffel's opponents, who spoke disparagingly of "Mr. Eiffel's tower." Eiffel made a name for himself at home and abroad as a bridge builder. He was involved in the construction of train stations and churches, and the steel inner framework of the Statue of Liberty in New York is his work.
