2024-01-21 - 70 years ago: Launch 1st nuclear submarine USS Nautilus
On 21.01.1954, the first nuclear-powered submarine was launched in Groton Connecticut. Commander Eugene P. Wilkinson became the first commander. Among the spectacular missions in 25 years of service were the circumnavigation of the North Pole in 1958 and the ice mission during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. In the spring of 1979, she sailed on her last voyage before she was officially decommissioned in 1980.
