2024-05-06 - 30th anniversary Opening of the Channel Tunnel
After a total construction period of eight years, the Eurotunnel was opened by Queen Elizabeth II and French President Francois Mitterand on May 6, 1994. The contract for the construction of the Eurotunnel had been signed on February 12, 1986. On December 1, 1990, the last rock of the first tunnel tube (service tube) was drilled through. 40 meters below the seabed, 14 miles off the English coast and ten miles off the French coast, Graham Fagg and Philippe Cozette were able to shake hands. Work on the main tunnels took a further six months. With a total length of 50.45 kilometers, 38 of which are underwater, it is the longest undersea tunnel in the world.
