2026-06-01 - 5 years ago: Gotthard Base Tunnel opened
On June 1, 2016, the world's longest rail tunnel, the 57-kilometer Gotthard Base Tunnel, was ceremoniously opened after 17 years of construction. It consists of two single-track tubes and connects the north portal at Erstfeld in the canton of Uri with the south portal at Bodio in the southern canton of Ticino. After several months of trial operation, the line was opened to freight traffic on September 5 and to passenger traffic on December 11, 2016.
