2026-10-27 - 65 years ago: Tanks at Checkpoint Charlie
At Berlin's "Checkpoint Charlie," the border crossing in Berlin's Friedrichstrasse reserved for diplomats and members of the three Western powers, Soviet tanks followed American ones on October 27, 1961. For 16 hours, the cannon barrels loaded with live ammunition were pointed at each other head-on. A good two months after the Wall was built, the world held its breath once again until the Soviets were the first to withdraw their tanks. The confrontation at Checkpoint Charlie was one of the most dangerous moments in the Cold War.
