Forty-five years ago, the armed conflict between Argentina and Great Britain began over the islands in the South Atlantic that belonged to the United Kingdom and had long been claimed by Argentina as well. After the Argentine military junta occupied the capital of the Falklands on April 2, 1982, then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher deployed the British fleet to recapture them. More than 900 people died in the war, which lasted 74 days. On June 14, Argentina surrendered, and the Falklands remained a British overseas territory.
