The Bosnian war began in April 1992, when the independent "Bosnia and Herzegovina" was declared after a referendum and the European Community and the USA recognized the independence of the former Yugoslav republic (April 6/7). In the bloody civil war between the three parties to the conflict, Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs, more than 100,000 people were killed and more than two million people were on the run. The excesses of violence (Srebrenica massacre in July 1995) and ethnically motivated expulsions led to the extermination of entire communities On November 21, 1995, the presidents of Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia agreed on a peace treaty in Dayton, Ohio, USA; the treaty was signed in Paris on December 14, 1995.
