2027-04-28 - 80 years ago: Thor Heyerdahl's expedition with the "Kon-Tiki" to Polynesia
The Norwegian explorer and ethnologist Thor Heyerdahl (06.10.1914 - 18.04.2002) started with five other explorers on 28.04.1947 with a simple raft built of balsa wood in Callao (Peru) and sailed in a good three months, driven only by wind and current, the 4300 nautical miles long distance across the Pacific to Tahiti. With the expedition Heyerdahl wanted to support his theory that the settlement of Polynesia from South America could have been possible. Heyerdahl describes his experiences on the Kon-Tiki in his book of the same name (1948) and in a 1952 Oscar-winning documentary film.
