On 1 July 1997, after more than 150 years of colonial rule, Great Britain returned its former crown colony to China and Hong Kong became a Chinese Special Administrative Region. For a long time, the principle of ‘one country, two systems’ applied, according to which Hong Kong was governed autonomously, but after persistent demonstrations and calls for democracy, China tightened the reins.
