2028-01-31 - 85 years ago: Battle of Stalingrad - Surrender of the 6th army
The battle of Stalingrad was the first big defeat of the war for the German Wehrmacht against the Soviet Union and marked a turning point for the eastern front line. After the 6th German army had already conquered 90 percent of the city of Stalingrad in the fall of 1942 the Soviets started a large offensive on November 19th. The offensive resulted in the encirclement of German troops (November, 22) and their eventual surrender on 31 January 1943. The final death toll was more than 700,000.
