On May 23, 1992, Sicilian judge and Mafia hunter Giovanni Falcone was killed by a bomb along with his wife Francesca Morvillo and three bodyguards as he was on his way to his weekend home near Palermo. Falcone is considered a symbolic figure in the fight against organized crime in Sicily. A few weeks later, on July 19, 1992, Falcone's colleague and closest confidant Paolo Borsellino also fell victim to an explosive attack in Palermo, along with four companions and a female companion.
