75 years of the "New Look": How Christian Dior revolutionised fashion
The war is over. But its consequences can still be felt everywhere. In fashion, too. Clothes were mainly functional - until 12 February 1947, when a defilee took place at 30 Avenue Montaigne that no one would have expected. A certain Christian Dior, a debutant of Parisian haute couture, proclaims a return to glamour and opulence. His fitted jackets, accentuated bust, swinging, wide skirts and lavish use of fabrics symbolise feminine staging and an end to austerity. Yet the "New Look" is basically neither new nor modern, since it harks back to forms of the Belle Époque and the Rococo. It is not at all in keeping with the active role that women have recently assumed, and for many it is a step backwards in terms of emancipation. On a trip to America, the fashion designer was greeted by female demonstrators with the call "Christian Dior, go home!". "My goal was not to revolutionise fashion, but to righteously execute what I felt," the couturier says in his autobiography "Dior and I". And: "Couture returned to its main task, which is to adorn and beautify women."
