Accident of the Amoco Cadiz - Tanker disaster in Brittany 1978
On March 16, 1978, the large tanker "Amoco Cadiz," sailing under the Liberian flag, ran aground and broke apart not far from the French port of Brest. Around 230,000 tons of crude oil spilled along 360 kilometers of coastline, causing the largest oil spill in the history of France to date. Thousands of seabirds and fish lost their lives. The legal dispute over damages did not end until 14 years after the disaster. In January 1992, the U.S. oil company Amoco was ordered to pay a total of 195 million euros to the affected communities and the French state.
