Allied Occupation of Germany 1945 - 1990
Following the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht, the victorious powers - the Soviet Union, the USA, Great Britain and France - assumed governmental authority on June 5, 1945 with the signing of the Berlin Declaration. The German Reich was divided into four occupation zones, the capital Berlin into four sectors. Even after the end of the occupation status in 1955, troops remained stationed in East and West - until reunification in 1990.
