Amundsen, Roald
The Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen (born 16.07.1872) is the most successful explorer in the Arctic and Antarctic: on 14.12.1911 he was the first person to reach the South Pole, 35 days earlier than his British arch-rival Robert Falcon Scott. He was the first to cross the Northwest Passage (1903-1906), i.e. the sea route that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans north of the American continent. He reached the geographic North Pole on 12 May 1926 as the leader of a trans-Arctic flight in the airship "Norge" together with other participants. Amundsen was considered missing after a rescue flight for the injured explorer Umberto Nobile and presumably died on 18 June 1928 near Bear Island/Norway.
