Boat People - Refugees from Vietnam 1978/79
After the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, millions of people fled from the communist regime across the open sea. The intensive reporting on the misery of the so-called "boat people" led to a great wave of solidarity among the population in 1978. The Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Ernst Albrecht, became active and on December 3, 1978, the first 163 "boat people" landed at Hannover Airport. They belonged to the mostly ethnic Chinese refugees, who had waited on the overcrowded and ailing cargo ship Hai Hong off Malaysia, but were not allowed to go ashore there. The German government decided to initially accept 10,000 refugees. In the end, almost 40,000 Vietnamese found refuge in Germany. In order to spare them long asylum procedures, the category of "humanitarian refugees" was created. The German journalist Rupert Neudeck had founded the association "A Ship for Vietnam" together with celebrities such as Heinrich Böll. Financed by donations, the freighter "Cap Anamur" was chartered and converted into a hospital ship. The first voyage began in August 1979, the association continued the action until 1986. In total, more than 10,000 people were rescued from distress at sea.
