The American singer, songwriter and pianist Ray Charles, real name Raymond Charles Robinson, was born on 23 September 1930 in Albany (US state of Georgia) and died on 10 June 2004 in Beverly Hills (US state of California). He is regarded as a style-defining figure in the development of rhythm and blues, blues, country and soul and sold around 90 million records. The musician, who is also known as the "High Priest of Soul", went blind at the age of seven due to glaucoma.
