Diana, Princess of Wales - fashion icon
Princess Diana was considered a fashion icon. The young Lady Diana Spencer is said to have been a stranger to the designer fashion world at first. She owned only one dress, one blouse and a few good shoes, and borrowed the rest from friends. Only slowly did the then 20-year-old Diana settle into her new role after her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981. One of her most famous dresses is the dark blue velvet gown by Victor Edelstein in which Diana danced with John Travolta at a state dinner at the White House in 1985. She also wore the "Travolta dress" two years later during a visit official with Prince Charles to what was then West Germany.
