Earhart, Amelia
Amelia Earhart (born July 24, 1897) was an American aviation pioneer and women's rights activist. She was the first woman to cross the Atlantic in solo flight. On May 20, 1932, she took off from Newfoundland bound for Paris. However, bad weather and technical problems meant that she had to make an emergency landing near Londonderry in Northern Ireland. On January 11, 1935, she became the first person to fly solo over the part of the Pacific Ocean between Honolulu (Hawaii) and Oakland (California). Earhart kept seeking new challenges and set numerous records. In 1937, she wanted to be the first woman to circumnavigate the earth at the height of the equator. It was to be her last great adventure. After almost 40,000 kilometers, she and her navigator Fred Noonan disappeared without a trace over the Pacific Ocean and were presumed missing from July 2, 1937. She was declared dead on January 5, 1939.
