VW headquarter in Wolfsburg On May 26, 1938, Adolf Hitler laid the foundation stone for the Volkswagen factory on a site in the Fallersleben area north of Braunschweig. In the same year, the city of Wolfsburg was established as a place of residence for the workers, at that time under the name "City of the KdF Car". The production of private cars did not start until after the Second World War, but by 1955 one million Volkswagens had been produced in Wolfsburg.
