A simple tyre becomes a leisure racer in 1958. Tyres as sports and leisure equipment, mostly made of wood, already existed before. But when the American inventor Richard Knerr and his school friend Arthur Melin launched the plastic hoop under the name Hula Hoop ("Hula" for Hawaiian dance and "Hoop" for "hoop") in their toy company "Wham-O" in 1958, they triggered an unimagined hype. By April, people were already queuing up to get their hands on the coveted toy, and Wham-O sold a total of 25 million hula hoops within four months in 1958.
