Hungarian Revolution, 1956
On October 23, 1956, the first shots were fired at an initially peaceful rally in Budapest. The reason for the unrest was growing discontent among the population over the inflexibility of the party leadership, which was still in the hands of old Stalinists. With the outbreak of the revolution, the dream of independence seemed to be fulfilled. The newly appointed head of government, Imre Nagy, announced Hungary's withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact. On November 4, however, 1000 Soviet tanks and bombers attacked the city from all sides - the uprising was bloodily put down.
