Iraq War - Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2003
On March 20, 2003, the war of the USA and its allied forces (coalition of the willing) began in Iraq. The "Operation Iraqi Freedom" was about the alleged threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and the overthrow of the then Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Six weeks later, US President George W. Bush declared the war over. The Iraqi troops were defeated. Saddam Hussein was arrested in December 2003 and sentenced to death in 2006. During the American occupation of Iraq (2003-2011), civil war-like conditions prevailed with thousands of terrorist attacks and violent assaults.
