Iran wants morality police disbanded
Following ongoing demonstrations in Iran, the political leadership has unexpectedly announced measures. According to the prosecutor general, the morality police have been disbanded, Iranian media reported on Sunday (04.12.2022). The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after being arrested by the morality police was the trigger for the bloody mass protests that have been ongoing in the country for more than two months. The interior minister announced that a committee would be set up to clarify the reasons for the protests - but without the involvement of the demonstrators. Critics of the political leadership reacted cautiously to the announcements. Iran's morality police, the so-called "Gasht-e Erschad" (morality patrol), has so far enforced Islamic dress codes as a special unit of the police.
