Pope John Paul II (18.05.1920 - 02.04.2005)
Karol Wojtyla, later Pope John Paul II, was born in Wadowice (Poland) on May 18, 1920. After ordination in 1946, he went to Rome to study and returned to Poland in 1948 as a chaplain and student priest. In 1958 Wojtyla was appointed auxiliary bishop of Krakow, and in 1963 he was named archbishop. In 1967, Pope Paul VI elevated him to the rank of cardinal in Rome. On October 22, 1978, he became the first Slav to be elected pope. For more than 25 years, until his death on April 2, 2005, John Paul II was the head of the Catholic Christians. Six years later, on 27.04.2014, he was canonized by Pope Francis. In 2011 he was beatified, canonization followed in 2014.
