Josephine Baker (1906-1975)
Baker, who is now considered an icon of the LGBT community, first became known in Germany through her performances in Berlin during the Golden Twenties. Ostracized during the Nazi era, she returned to the now-divided city several times after the war—to both the West and the East. A few days after a celebrated comeback, she died of a stroke in Paris in 1975.
