Lebanese demand higher pensions and salaries
Angry public sector employees and retired army personnel protested in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Thursday (31/03/2023) against the worsening economic crisis. They are demanding better pay or an increase in their pensions after the Lebanese currency lost more than 95 percent of its value. "We are starving," the demonstrators shouted at the midday protests. They tried to break through barbed wires leading to the Lebanese government palace and the central bank. Lebanese army soldiers and riot police used force to push the protesters away from the fences. Since late 2019, the Mediterranean country has been mired in the worst economic and financial crisis in its history. It is attributed, among other things, to decades of political and economic corruption.
