Mattingly, Thomas K. (17.03. 1936* - 31.10.2023)
The US astronaut Thomas Kenneth "Ken" Mattingly died on 31 October 2023 at the age of 87. He was assigned as a pilot for the command module of the Apollo 13 moon mission in 1970, but had to cancel due to illness. Following an explosion of an oxygen tank on board the spacecraft, the space capsule was unable to manoeuvre. Mattingly developed an energy-saving procedure from Earth that enabled Apollo 13 to return safely. It is assumed that he saved the lives of astronauts James Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise.
