Merino rescues Spain amidst Belgian goalkeeping drama
Mikel Merino fired Spain into the World Cup semi-final against France following a match that required great patience. In the 2–1 (1–1) quarter-final victory over Belgium, the Arsenal player—who had come off the bench—scored the winning goal in the 88th minute, securing Spain's first appearance in the final four since winning the World Cup 16 years ago. Merino and the European champions benefited from a blunder by Senne Lammens, who had stepped in for injured first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois during the closing stages of the game.
