Midsummer: The Magic of the Summer Solstice
Midsummer (Swedish: Midsommar) is one of Sweden’s most important traditional festivals and is celebrated around the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. The focus is on celebrating nature, light and summer, which have long held cultural significance, particularly in the Nordic countries. Typical features of the festival include the decorated maypole (Majstång), traditional dances, flower wreaths and communal meals featuring herring, new potatoes and strawberries. Midsummer’s Night has also been believed to possess special magical powers for centuries, which is why numerous customs and legends are associated with this night.
