Nazi Era - Saarland Plebiscite 1935
Since the defeat of the German Reich in World War I, the Saarland had been a mandated territory of the League of Nations under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. On January 13, 1935, a referendum was held there under its supervision. In deciding whether the area should become part of the German Reich, France, or maintain the status quo, the overwhelming majority of those eligible to vote voted for Germany. Nine percent were in favor of maintaining the status quo, and 0.4 percent were in favor of annexation to France. On March 1, 1935, the annexation of the newly created Gau Saarland took place under Gauleiter Josef Bürckel. After the vote, around 8,000 people threatened with persecution fled the Saar region.
