Nazi Era - German-Italian relations (Berlin-Rome axis)
After Hitler had long sought closer ties with fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini, a secret treaty of friendship was signed on October 25, 1936, in which the two countries agreed on a common foreign policy. The alliance was later referred to as the Berlin-Rome axis, with reference to a speech by Mussolini (November 1, 1936). It was followed by the so-called Steel Pact or "Pact of Steel" (May 22, 1939), which provided for military cooperation between the two countries and mutual support in the event of war. On June 10, 1940, Italy entered the war as an ally of Germany. The alliance of the two states ended after the Allied landing in Sicily and the fall of Mussolini with the Cassibile Armistice between the Kingdom of Italy and the Allies on September 3, 1943. On October 3, 1943, the Italian government declared war on the German Empire. The Western powers recognized Italy as an ally.
