Nazi Era - Olympic Games 1936
The 1936 Winter Olympics were held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen from February 6 to 16. The Summer Games took place in Berlin from August 1 to 16, with 49 nations and 3961 athletes taking part. An Olympic torch relay took place for the first time and selected competitions were shown on the new medium of television. The Winter Games and even more so the Summer Games in Berlin were also of great importance for Nazi propaganda and were instrumentalized by Hitler and the NSDAP to present the Nazi state abroad in a positive light and to highlight the achievements of the German participants at home. Germany took first place in the medal table with 33 gold medals. The most successful athlete of the Games was the American Jesse Owen with 4 gold medals.
