Panama Canal
On August 5, 1914, the SS Ancon is the first ship to sail through the newly created Panama Canal, which connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The 82-kilometer-long artificial waterway in Central America was opened on Aug. 15, 1914, after more than 30 years of construction, and was returned to Panama by the United States on Dec. 31, 1999. With more than 14,000 ship passages per year, the canal is one of the most important waterways in the world and will further increase its capacity through the expansion construction, which is to be completed in the anniversary year.
