Peru Honours Pope Leo XIV With 14-Metre Statue
In Callao, the port district next to Lima, a 14-metre statue of Pope Leo XIV is being built. The figure, made of steel, fibreglass and resin, was designed by Peruvian sculptor Rafael Gutierrez. It was funded by a donation from the regional bank Caja Huancayo. The city of Callao describes it as the largest statue of a living pope. It is to be erected in a park overlooking the Pacific, in time for the pope's visit to Peru in November 2026. Leo XIV was born in Chicago but lived in Peru for more than two decades, first as a missionary and later as Bishop of Chiclayo.
