After the election of Alexander Dubcek as General Secretary of the Czechoslovak Communist Party on January 5, 1968, the people of the CSSR experienced in the spring and early summer of 1968 how a socialist system took on democratic features with the introduction of a multiparty system, the abolition of state censorship and market reforms. But the hopes of millions for a better future and a socialism with a human face did not last long. On the night of August 21, 1968, troops of the Warsaw Pact invaded the CSSR and put a violent end to the "Prague Spring".
