Mary Quant, born 11.02.1934, British designer. - Quant was considered the inventor of the miniskirt and revolutionised not only the length of skirts but also the way fashion is sold and bought. In 1955, she opened her first boutique on London's legendary King's Road. Elaborately decorated shop windows attracted customers. Quant focused on fashion that could chase the bus, as she herself described it: "ready-to-wear" - uncomplicated and inexpensive. Quant designed simple shapes in strong colours. Patent leather boots with a high shaft and patterned tights were also part of the typical Quant style. By 1963, her fashions were so successful that Quant opened a second shop and the Quant brand was soon seen around the world on accessories and make-up. In 1966, the Queen awarded the designer an Order of Merit.
