Cuban politician Raúl Castro, born June 3, 1931, was one of the leading figures of the Cuban Revolution, but was long overshadowed by his famous older brother Fidel Castro, who is still revered in Cuba as the "máximo líder." Raul Castro served as defense minister (1959-2008) and succeeded his brother in 2008. As president (2008-2018), he initiated economic reforms and a cautious rapprochement with the United States. In 2011, he succeeded his brother as First Secretary of the PCC, the Communist Party of Cuba. His resignation as party leader in April 2021 marked the end of the Castro era in Cuba after more than 60 years.
