Launch of the Telstar news satellite
On July 10, 1962, the first civilian U.S. news and television satellite, Telstar, was launched into space from Cape Canaveral. The first test images reached the receiving stations in Brittany and Cornwall as early as July 11. Then, on July 23, millions of people in America and Europe were able to watch the first direct-to-home television broadcasts between the two continents via the Telstar satellite.
