SZ Photo - Defensive battles after Stalingrad and counter-offensive under General von Manstein, 1943
After the retreat from the Caucasus and the looming defeat at Stalingrad, Red Army troops forced the Wehrmacht units into fierce defensive battles. The Wehrmacht was forced to retreat further and further west from the river Don. After the temporary loss of the city of Kharkiv, the Army Group Don under Erich von Manstein was able to reconquer the city in February-March 1943 in a counteroffensive and hold it for a few months. On the one hand, this temporarily averted the uncontrolled collapse of the Eastern Front, two Soviet armies were completely wiped out and at the same time the foundation was laid for an advance on Kursk. - This selection contains pictures from our partner agency Süddeutsche Zeitung Photo.
