Die Kämpfe gegen die Herero und Nama in Deutsch-Südwestafrika (1904–1908) waren ein brutaler Kolonialkrieg, der als erster Völkermord des 20. Jahrhunderts gilt. Nach dem Aufstand der Herero 1904 besiegten die deutschen Truppen sie in der Schlacht am Waterberg und trieben sie gezielt in die Omaheke-Wüste, wo Tausende verhungerten oder verdursteten. Auch die Nama leisteten erbitterten Widerstand, wurden jedoch durch deutsche „Konzentrationslager“ und eine gezielte Vernichtungsstrategie zermürbt, wobei insgesamt bis zu 80.000 Menschen ums Leben kamen.
